Slavic water demon

Rusalka Slavic mythology

Slavic water demon, haunting the waterway where she died.

Rusalka's soul was that of a young woman, who died in or near the water with violent death or suicide.

To avenge her death, Rusalka would lure young men into the water with her singing or beauty, and drown them.

In some Slavic cultures during the Rusalka Week (in early June), swimming in rivers and lakes was forbidden. At the end of the week there was a ritual with burial or banishing of Rusalki.
